A study in humans demonstrated that the circular RNA (circRNA) form of the circESR1 is expressed in vaginal secretions and menstrual blood, with its detection not impairing specificity for vaginal fluid identification [Liu et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-019-02027-y]. In a subsequent multiplex assay, the circRNA form of the circESR1 was detected in 36 out of 40 vaginal secretion samples and was confirmed to be RNase R-resistant, indicating its utility for identifying aged biological stains [Liu et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Fsigen.2020.102312].
