A study in humans demonstrated that circFLI1 is specifically expressed in peripheral blood and is associated with aging, where its levels are elevated in aged individuals [Misir et al. DOI:10.1038/s41418-022-00948-7]. A study in humans identified the circFLI1 as an intronic circRNA that is significantly up-regulated and co-differentially expressed in both plasma and lung tissue from patients with sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome [Guo et al. DOI:10.1016/j.lfs.2021.119566]. Separately, research on human coronary arteries from a postmortem case demonstrated that circFLI1 shows differential expression correlating with the anatomical severity of atherosclerosis, establishing their pathological role in coronary artery disease [Hou et al. DOI:10.1002/jcla.23552].
