A study in humans and other model organisms demonstrated that the circHIPK3 is abundantly expressed in brain, cerebellum, heart, colon, lung, and stomach, where it is involved in cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis [Misir et al. DOI:10.1038/s41418-022-00948-7]. In neural tissue and glioma, it functions as a miRNA sponge for miR-124-3p to derepress STAT3, thereby promoting glioma invasiveness [Mehta et al. DOI:10.1016/j.pneurobio.2020.101746]. A study in humans demonstrated that the circHIPK3 was significantly elevated in peripheral blood leukocytes of coronary artery disease patients, showing an area under the curve of 0.68 with a sensitivity of 0.66 and a specificity of 0.71 [Tian et al.
