Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the circMBOAT2 is significantly lower in the serum of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) compared to healthy controls, showing an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.756 for diagnostic potential [Tian et al. DOI:10.3390/molecules26041155]. A study in human peripheral bloodstains demonstrated that the circMBOAT2 exhibited a unique, linear degradation profile over a 120-day storage interval, with its relative expression levels showing a significant negative correlation with bloodstain age under outdoor conditions (r=0.82) [Wei et al. DOI:10.1016/j.forsciint.2022.111408]. This circRNA biomarker, along with others, showed continuous degradation useful for time since deposition estimation, and its application for bloodstain dating has been noted in broader reviews of molecular forensic methods [Mróz et al.
