Research in human body fluid identification has identified circMMP7, a circular RNA, as a marker for menstrual blood, where detecting circRNAs derived from the same gene as mRNA typing could improve the stability and sensitivity of detecting this specific fluid [Li et al. A study in human body fluid samples demonstrated that the inclusion of circular RNA (circRNA) transcripts of circMMP7 in mRNA profiling significantly improved detection sensitivity and stability for menstrual blood identification [Zhang et al. The use of primers targeting both linear and circular forms achieved a detection limit of 0.003 ng input RNA, enhanced detection in mixed samples and samples with fluctuating linear mRNA expression, and provided stable detection in RNase R-treated and artificially degraded menstrual bloodstains where linear-targeting primers failed. A subsequent characterization confirmed circMMP7's menstrual blood-specific expression pattern and that the inclusion of its circRNAs did not impair specificity [Liu et al.
