A study in mice demonstrated that the circPAPPA2 is highly expressed in early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma, bladder cancers, and breast cancer, and its decreased expression in myocardial tissues is associated with impaired cardiac function following acute myocardial infarction [Misir et al. 10.1038/s41418-022-00948-7]. Further research in human hepatocellular carcinoma showed that the circPAPPA2 promotes stem-like characteristics and tumor growth under hypoxic conditions via the miR-328-3p/HIF1AN axis [Huang et al. 10.3390/cells11091381]. A study in humans demonstrated that circPAPPA2 is upregulated in preeclampsia [Huang et al. DOI:10.3390/cells11091381].
