A study in humans demonstrated that the circCCDC40 is a highly specific circular RNA marker for semen identification, as part of a target RNA sequencing panel developed for body fluid contributor deconvolution in forensic mixtures [Yu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2025.103416]. The assay, which included 135 RNA-SNPs across 42 body fluid genes, showed clear separation between five body fluid types in single-source samples and successfully detected all components in artificial mixtures of 2–5 body fluids, with most genotypes correctly associated with their contributors.
