Forensic Context

A study in humans identified 197 miRNAs associated with wound healing, burn wound healing, and scarring, with specific miRNAs like hsa-miR-21 and hsa-miR-31 altering fibroproliferative markers and cell behaviors post-burn [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. In a separate human study investigating recurrent myocardial infarction risk, 164 miRNAs were differentially expressed in whole blood, with 69 remaining significant after false-discovery rate correction, and whole blood was identified as a preferred sample source over plasma for miRNA profiling [Onuoha et al. DOI:10.1111/cts.13307]. A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-4725-3p was differentially expressed and shared across three pairs of monozygotic twins, indicating its potential as a biomarker for distinguishing genetically identical individuals in forensic identification [Xiao et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.05.003].
