A study in human primary astrocytes demonstrated that the miR-4739 is significantly down-regulated (Fold Change: -2.48) in extracellular vesicles after exposure to 3 Gy proton radiation, identifying it as a biomarker of neurological radiation injury [Gaines et al. DOI:10.1016/j.lssr.2021.11.001]. In a separate human clinical study, the miR-4739 was found to be significantly down-regulated in the whole blood of patients with coronary artery disease who experienced recurrent myocardial infarction after percutaneous coronary intervention, establishing it as a biomarker for recurrent MI risk [Onuoha et al.
