A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-125b-2 is markedly upregulated in trauma plasma and contains pro-inflammatory motifs, with a panel including this biomarker distinguishing trauma from healthy controls with a cross-validated AUROC of 0.98 [Ren et al. DOI:10.1016/j.isci.2025.113569]. In human skin, the mir-125b-2 was found to be downregulated 4 days post-burn in deep partial thickness burn skin versus normal skin, though it was upregulated 4 hours post-burn in heat-shocked fibroblasts, and its transfection as a mimic promoted keratinocyte proliferation and migration [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in mice demonstrated that the mir-125b-2 was highly expressed in normal corporal tissue and its expression remained unchanged in a model of diet-induced erectile dysfunction [Barbery et al. DOI:10.1111/jsm.12793]. In human forensic samples, comprehensive small RNA profiling identified the mir-125b-2 as a potential body fluid identification marker for saliva, as reported in prior literature [Liu et al. DOI:10.3390/genes13091530].
