A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-125b-5p was downregulated in plasma-derived exosomes from severe trauma patients compared to operative controls, indicating its role in hematopoiesis and immune function regulation [Munley et al. DOI:10.1097/TA.0000000000004225]. A separate review of human skin burns reported that the miR-125b-5p was downregulated in deep partial thickness burn skin four days post-injury and was upregulated in heat-shocked fibroblasts four hours post-burn, with functional studies showing that transfection with a miR-125b mimic promoted keratinocyte proliferation and migration [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-125b-5p was significantly downregulated in the serum of atrial fibrillation patients at baseline diagnosis and its target genes were enriched in cancer-related pathways [Wang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.hrtlng.2020.03.021].
