Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-486-3p showed the greatest increase in expression (202.31%) in bloodstains compared to fresh blood, as identified through massively parallel sequencing of whole-genome miRNA profiles [Fang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2018.10.001]. A study in mice demonstrated that chronic methamphetamine exposure significantly alters miRNA expression in the nucleus accumbens, identifying 45 known METH-responsive miRNAs including the miR-486-3p which was predicted to target genes like Capn9 and Pde4c, with qPCR validation showing strong correlation [Zhu et al. DOI:10.002/jnr.23605]. In human postmortem brain studies of alcohol use disorder, the miR-486-3p was confirmed as differentially expressed in the prefrontal cortex and its regulatory networks were validated in independent sample sets [Lim et al. DOI:10.1038/s41398-021-01635-w].
