Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-486-5p is a body fluid-specific miRNA marker for peripheral blood identification, showing the highest and most distinguishable expression levels in peripheral and menstrual blood compared to non-blood samples [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2024.103180]. In a separate human study, the miR-486-5p was significantly elevated in plasma-derived exosomes from individuals with high-grade atherosclerotic plaques, highlighting its potential as a predictive biomarker for coronary atherosclerosis progression [Kim et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179619]. In a separate clinical study on living human subjects, serum levels of the miR-486-5p were significantly down-regulated in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and were incorporated into a diagnostic panel with high predictive accuracy [Mo et al. DOI:10.2147/NSS.S382765].
