Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-489 was significantly decreased (0.496 of control, p=0.0113) in the postmortem prefrontal cortex of antidepressant-free depressed suicide subjects compared to non-psychiatric controls [Smalheiser et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0033201]. In separate human skin research, the mir-489 was downregulated 24 hours post-injury in skin wounds compared to unwounded skin [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) demonstrated that the mir-489 was identified as a feature in a Day 21 four-group survival prediction model following whole thorax irradiation [May et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-022-16316-x]. A review of human postmortem brain studies reported that the mir-489 was downregulated in the Brodmann area 9 of subjects with major depressive disorder who died by suicide [Yoshino & Dwivedi DOI:10.3389/fpsyt.2020.543893].
