A study in humans demonstrated that miR-491-5p is upregulated with age in peripheral whole blood and was validated as one of 11 age-related microRNAs used to construct a highly accurate forensic age estimation model using a random forest regression algorithm, achieving a mean absolute error of 3.68 years in the training set [Wang et al. Concurrently, research in human sepsis patients identified miR-491-5p as significantly upregulated in peripheral blood compared to healthy controls, where it was validated among differentially expressed microRNAs associated with the disease [Xu et al.
