A study in human tissues demonstrated that the miR-499a-5p exhibited high expression in pooled muscle samples, though it showed only a slight difference between heart and skeletal muscle, leading to its consideration as a marker for muscle in general [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2017.02.002]. A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-499a-5p is a diagnostic biomarker for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), showing significant upregulation in AMI patients compared to non-AMI controls, with qRT-PCR validation confirming its increased expression and an ROC analysis yielding an AUC of 0.965 [Zhong et al. DOI:10.1002/jcla.23099]. In a separate human study evaluating MI-associated microRNAs under strenuous exercise, the miR-499a-5p was measured via qPCR in marathon runners and showed no significant correlation with cardiac troponin T levels (r=0.09, p=0.6), indicating a release behavior distinct from troponin [Shirvani Samani et al.
