A review of human studies identified 197 miRNAs associated with wound healing, burn wound healing, and scarring, with the miR-539-5p specifically upregulated in burn hypertrophic scar tissue compared to normal skin [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in rats demonstrated that the miR-539-5p is downregulated in skeletal muscle following burn trauma, with a fold change of 0.404318, indicating its potential role in the pathogenesis of muscle wasting [Zhang et al. DOI:10.5505/tjtes.2015.80707].
