A study in human postmortem prefrontal cortex tissue demonstrated that the mir-579 was significantly up-regulated (2.06-fold) in subjects with bipolar disorder compared to non-psychiatric controls [Smalheiser et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0086469]. A separate review noted that the mir-579 was also reported to be upregulated in patients with a major depressive episode [Miguel et al. DOI:10.1089/Ars.2017.7175].
