Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-1281 was downregulated in plasma from patients with mild, moderate, and severe traumatic brain injury compared to healthy controls, as identified by microarray analysis [Qin et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0204051]. A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-1281 was upregulated with age in peripheral whole blood and was selected as one of 11 microRNAs used to construct a highly accurate forensic age estimation model via random forest regression, achieving a mean absolute error of 3.68 years in the training set [Wang et al. DOI:10.3389/fgene.2022.1031806]. In a separate forensic investigation of human cardiac tissue, initial microarray and PCR data indicated the mir-1281 was upregulated in cases of mechanical asphyxia compared to other causes of death, identifying it as a potential biomarker for this manner of death [Han et al. DOI:10.1016/j.forsciint.2020.110293].
