A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-1281 was upregulated with age in peripheral whole blood and was selected as one of 11 microRNAs used to construct a highly accurate forensic age estimation model via random forest regression, achieving a mean absolute error of 3.68 years in the training set [Wang et al. In a separate forensic investigation of human cardiac tissue, initial microarray and PCR data indicated the mir-1281 was upregulated in cases of mechanical asphyxia compared to other causes of death, identifying it as a potential biomarker for this manner of death [Han et al.
