Forensic Context

A study in human postmortem serum demonstrated that exosomal hsa-miR-1298-3p was significantly downregulated (3.29-fold) in acute myocardial infarction cases compared to hemorrhagic shock controls [Kanno et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-022-02913-Y]. A separate review of human skin tissue reported that hsa-miR-1298-5p was downregulated in venous ulcers compared to normal skin and acute wounds [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. The mir-1298 is a microRNA with demonstrated diagnostic and therapeutic roles in diabetic erectile dysfunction (ED) in rat models, where it is downregulated in penile tissue and its miR-1298/B4GalT1 axis may function in stem cell therapy for ED [Song et al. DOI:10.3389/fendo.2022.1034043]. This biomarker is also identified as a potential forensic evidence marker, as it can differentiate venous blood from other body fluids [Liu et al. DOI:10.1016/j.ccr.2025.216644].
