Forensic Context

A study in human postmortem brain tissue demonstrated that the miR-130a-3p was significantly upregulated in traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases compared to non-traumatic controls and its expression was significantly higher in cases with short (<1 day) and middle (1–7 days) survival times [Consalvo et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179539]. A separate investigation in human peripheral blood from physiologically unaffected individuals found the miR-130a-3p to be significantly differentially expressed depending on sex, a finding that was concordant across two independent cohorts [Meder et al. DOI:10.1373/clinchem.2014.224238]. A study in mice demonstrated that the miR-130a-3p is a serum microRNA whose levels significantly increase 24 hours after a 2 Gy total body irradiation exposure, distinguishing irradiated from unirradiated animals [Acharya et al. DOI:10.1126/scitranslmed.aaa6593].
