A study in human tissues demonstrated that the miR-133a-3p is a promising marker for muscle in general, as it exhibited good separation properties in pooled samples of heart and skeletal muscle [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2017.02.002]. A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-133a-3p is a diagnostic biomarker for myocardial infarction and showed the highest positive correlation with cardiac troponin T (r=0.39, p<0.001) and significant upregulation in a high cTnT cohort after marathon running (fold change median 5.63 vs 1.01, p=0.03) [Shirvani Samani et al. DOI:10.3390/jcm11010005]. In a separate human study, the miR-133a-3p was identified as differentially expressed and shared across two pairs of monozygotic twins, suggesting a potential role in distinguishing genetically identical individuals [Xiao et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.05.003].
