A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-133a-5p was selected as a vaginal secretion-specific marker but was excluded from analysis as its Cq values were >35, indicating it was below the detection limit in all five tested body fluids (peripheral blood, menstrual blood, semen, saliva, and vaginal secretion) [Li et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-021-02678-w]. A study in mice demonstrated that the miR-133a-5p is upregulated in ocular tissue at all time points following both mild and severe methanol poisoning in males, and is downregulated in peripheral blood of male mice at 30 minutes post-mild poisoning and in female mice at 180 minutes post-mild poisoning [Gunay et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Fct.2023.113666]. In human non-small-cell lung cancer, the miR-133a-5p is a key mediator in a competing endogenous RNA network, where it is negatively correlated with and targeted by the lncRNA MIAT, and its overexpression in A549 cells depresses the expression of target mRNAs MYO1B, SGK1, and WNT9A [Zheng et al.
