Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-135a is a highly specific and stable marker for semen identification, as quantitative RT-PCR confirmed its strong over-expression in semen relative to other forensically relevant body fluids [Zubakov et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-009-0402-3]. This specificity was replicated in subsequent research, which also reported that the mir-135a displayed distinctly higher expression levels in semen compared to other body fluids [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2016.01.018]. A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-135a is a specific marker for seminal fluid identification and spermatogenesis, showing a significant expression increase in asthenospermia and oligospermia samples but decreased expression in astheno-oligospermia and normal semen [Mawlah et al. DOI:10.5455/aim.2022.30.205-212].
