Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-141 was added to a microRNA panel to improve the discrimination of forensically relevant body fluids, including feces, menstrual and vaginal secretions, saliva, and urine, in DNA extracts [Rhodes et al. DOI:10.3390/genes14050968]. A review of the literature notes that the mir-141 has been reported as saliva-specific by some authors and as placental-specific in maternal plasma by others, and its expression can be up-regulated in plasma and serum in various cancers, indicating factors that may influence its reliability as a forensic biomarker [Silva et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Fsigen.2014.09.002].
