A study in humans demonstrated that plasma extracellular vesicle miR-143-3p is significantly upregulated in patients with acute coronary syndrome experiencing sudden cardiac death compared to healthy controls [Huang et al. DOI:10.1039/D2MO00257D]. Its level was positively correlated with myoglobin, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed an area under the curve of 0.7778, indicating its fair predictive power for sudden cardiac death and supporting its application for postmortem forensic diagnosis of the cause of death due to acute coronary syndrome.
