Forensic Context

A study in humans identified the mir-148a as differentially expressed in whole blood of patients with coronary artery disease who experienced recurrent myocardial infarction after percutaneous coronary intervention, where it was downregulated and associated with atherosclerosis and the inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines [Onuoha et al. DOI:10.1111/cts.13307]. In a separate human study on deep burn wounds, the mir-148a was found to be downregulated in denatured dermis compared to normal skin, with a fold change of 0.4423, as part of a broader miRNA profiling analysis of wound healing [Liang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2011.10.014]. Another study in humans demonstrated that the mir-148a was significantly down-regulated in the serum of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and was part of a four-miRNA diagnostic panel that achieved an AUC of 0.955 for OSAS screening [Mo et al. DOI:10.2147/NSS.S382765].
