A study in human postmortem brain tissue found that the miR-148b-5p was significantly decreased in the prefrontal cortex of depressed suicide subjects compared to non-psychiatric controls [Smalheiser et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0033201]. In a separate forensic investigation using human FFPE brain tissue from fatal traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases, the miR-148b-5p was identified as a potential candidate marker based on a literature review, though it was not among the final three miRNAs studied in the experimental cohort [Bonin et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms241310836].
