Forensic Context

A study in human deep burn patients identified 66 differentially expressed miRNAs in denatured dermis, with the mir-15a being up-regulated 2.42-fold compared to normal skin [Liang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2011.10.014]. Separately, in human plasma from young acute coronary syndrome patients, the mir-15a was significantly down-regulated 7-fold in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction cases and demonstrated diagnostic utility with an area under the curve of 0.796 for discriminating patients from healthy controls [Tong et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms19051467]. A systematic review of studies in rats, mice, and humans identified aberrant expression profiles of 25 microRNAs, including the mir-15a, in diabetes associated with male reproductive complications [Latifi et al. DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-10197-1]. A separate review on microRNA biogenesis notes the mir-15a is a suboptimal miRNA whose biogenesis within the mir-15a/16 cluster is enhanced by auxiliary factors like SAFB1/2 and ERH [Shang et al. DOI:10.1038/s41576-023-00611-y].
