A study in human infants demonstrated that the mir-151a was significantly more abundant in breast milk and the gastric content of breast-fed infants compared to formula-fed infants and adult gastric juice, identifying it as a potential biomarker for estimating the last feeding type in forensic casework [Kakimoto et al. Separately, research in human monozygotic twins showed that the mir-151a was differentially expressed between co-twins in peripheral blood, supporting its potential as a molecular marker for discriminating between individuals with identical genomic DNA [Fang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2018.09.011].
