A study in human postmortem brain tissue demonstrated that the miR-155-3p is upregulated in traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases compared to non-traumatic controls, where it is involved in neuroinflammation, macrophage and microglial activation, and the release of inflammatory mediators [Consalvo et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179539]. In a separate forensic investigation for body fluid identification, the miR-155-3p was selected as a candidate marker for vaginal secretion from microarray data but was not further investigated as its expression levels were below those of reference genes in the target body fluid [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2016.01.018]. A study in patients with second-degree burns demonstrated that treatment with an artificial skin membrane increased the expression of the miR-155-3p in wound tissue, which was initially downregulated following injury [Li et al. DOI:10.1002/jcla.24564].
