A study in human postmortem brain tissue demonstrated that the miR-155-5p is upregulated in traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases compared to non-traumatic controls, where it is involved in neuroinflammation, macrophage and microglial activation, and the release of inflammatory mediators [Consalvo et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179539]. A separate investigation in human postmortem myocardial tissue found the miR-155-5p to be upregulated in septic hearts compared to non-septic controls, indicating its role in the myocardial response to sepsis [Pasi Lehto et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-81114-6]. A study in rats demonstrated that the miR-155-5p is downregulated in the hippocampus following cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, where it is directly targeted by lncRNA MSTRG.13,871 and subsequently targets Grip1 mRNA, forming a key regulatory axis in post-cardiac arrest brain injury [Li et al.
