A study in human postmortem brain tissue demonstrated that the miR-16-5p is upregulated in traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases compared to non-traumatic controls and its expression is significantly higher in cases with short survival (<1 day) and in the critical–fatal TBI subgroup, indicating its diagnostic and prognostic potential for TBI severity and survival time estimation [Consalvo et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179539]. Separately, research on human body fluids identified the miR-16-5p as a body fluid-specific marker showing the highest and most distinguishable expression levels in peripheral blood and menstrual blood compared to non-blood samples, and it was incorporated into a multi-class support vector machine model for forensic body fluid identification [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2024.103180]. A study in human trauma patients demonstrated that the miR-16-5p was significantly upregulated in circulating T cells during the injury stage compared to the recovery stage [Rau et al. DOI:10.2147/JIR.S375881].
