A study in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells demonstrated that the miR-185-5p was upregulated at 0.5 Gy and 1 Gy of fractionated radiation exposure and was predicted to interact with and downregulate target genes involved in cell cycle and prostate cancer pathways [Lee et al. DOI:10.1155/2014/456323]. In forensic science, analysis of human body fluids showed that the miR-185-5p displayed expression patterns similar to blood markers, with slightly higher expression in venous blood compared to menstrual blood, but it did not add discriminatory information beyond established blood markers and was not included in the final identification algorithm [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2016.01.018]. A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-185-5p is a candidate miRNA biomarker for menstrual blood identification, identified as a main effect with very significant predictive value in a logistic regression model [Hanson et al. DOI:10.1002/elps.201400171]. Subsequent research in humans confirmed the miR-185-5p shows the highest and most distinguishable expression levels in peripheral blood and menstrual blood compared to non-blood samples, and it was evaluated as a body fluid-specific miRNA marker for peripheral blood identification [Li et al.
