A study in humans identified the mir-103a as upregulated in serum from patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and found it targets 2087 genes, with its signaling associated with specific pathways including MAPK, TGF-β, and insulin signaling [Matyasova et al. DOI:10.4149/gpb_2021038]. Another study in humans found the mir-103a was upregulated in the plasma of young patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) as identified by small RNA sequencing [Tong et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms19051467]. A study in human autopsy-derived brain tissues demonstrated that the mir-103a was selected as a highly stable reference gene for quantitative RT-qPCR analysis in both fresh and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens, as well as in archived FFPE blocks stored for up to nine years [Lv et al. DOI:10.1007/s00414-019-02210-1]. This stability, validated using the RefFinder tool, enables accurate normalization for molecular analyses in forensic pathology, where short amplicon markers showed high quantification consistency between paired sample types.
