A study in humans demonstrated that miR-190a-5p was significantly downregulated in plasma from patients with isolated spinal cord injury (SCI) compared to healthy controls, and showed a trend toward stronger suppression in SCI compared to polytrauma patients without neurotrauma [Hörauf et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms262210954]. In a separate forensic investigation, miR-190a-5p was not identified as a specific marker for body fluid identification, as it was lowly expressed and did not show expected specificity for peripheral blood in a model designed to classify five human body fluids [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2024.103180]. A study in mice demonstrated that the miR-190a-5p was dysregulated in ischemic heart tissue following coronary artery ligation, identifying it as a novel miRNA altered during the initial response to myocardial infarction [Williams et al. DOI:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00041.2020].
