A study in humans identified hsa-miR-199b-5p as a differentially expressed microRNA with a potential regulatory role in sepsis, where it was part of a constructed competing endogenous RNA network predicted to interact with TGFBR3 [Zhang et al. DOI:10.1186/s12920-023-01460-8]. Another human study found hsa-miR-199b-5p was upregulated in sepsis patients compared to healthy controls based on serum exosomal miRNA sequencing [Li et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-025-89946-6]. A study in mice demonstrated that the miR-199b-5p is a predictive biomarker for survival, where lower circulating abundance at day 2 post-irradiation was associated with reduced survival in C3H mice, and it was also differentially expressed in C3H heart tissue [Rogers et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0232411]. In a pilot study using a minipig model of total body irradiation, the miR-199b-5p was identified among a set of conserved miRNAs with potential cross-species relevance, though it had not been previously linked to the minipig radiation model [Chakraborty et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-023-45250-9].
