Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that mir-206 exhibited specific high expression in skeletal muscle, with a ΔΔCq >9.5 compared to other tissues including heart, and was confirmed in individual native samples and dried swabs [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2017.02.002]. A study in human heart tissue from road traffic accident victims demonstrated that the mir-206 showed a significant, time-dependent reduction in expression over a 196-hour post-mortem interval, with a 4-fold lower mean expression at 196 hours compared to 12 hours, exhibiting the strongest association and largest effect size among the miRNAs tested for PMI estimation [Singh et al. DOI:10.1016/j.scijus.2023.04.011]. A systematic review further noted the mir-206 has been studied in skeletal muscle for post-mortem interval estimation [Cianci et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25158185].
