A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-218 was downregulated in denatured dermis from deep partial thickness burn patients compared to paired normal skin, with a 0.1801-fold change [Liang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2011.10.014], and it was also downregulated 4 days post-burn in deep partial thickness burn skin versus normal skin and 24 hours post-injury in skin wounds versus unwounded skin [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A review of human postmortem brain studies found the mir-218 is downregulated in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in schizophrenia and in the anterior cingulate cortex in bipolar disorder, while it is upregulated in the locus coeruleus of major depressive disorder suicide subjects and downregulated in synaptosomes of Brodmann area 10 from suicide subjects across diagnoses [Yoshino & Dwivedi DOI:10.3389/fpsyt.2020.543893]. In a separate human study on dilated cardiomyopathy, miR-218-5p was upregulated in left ventricular biopsies from volume overload cardiomyopathy compared to ischemic cardiomyopathy, and its direct targeting of DDX6 and SEMA4A was validated by luciferase assay [Bonet et al. DOI:10.3390/biom14050524].
