A study in human forensic samples demonstrated that the miR-219a-5p was selected as the best performing marker for brain tissue identification based on pronounced separation properties (ΔΔCq >9.5) in pooled samples, which was confirmed in individual native specimens and dried swabs [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2017.02.002]. A separate meta-analysis in humans noted the miR-219a-5p has been previously described as deregulated after traumatic brain injury, targeting the gene CACUL1 [Matyasova et al. DOI:10.4149/gpb_2021038].
