A study in humans identified hsa-miR-22-5p as a candidate for differentiating venous blood from menstrual blood in forensic body fluid identification, but it showed no larger difference between these fluids and was expressed at similar levels across all tested body fluids, leading to its exclusion from the final analytical panel [Sauer et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2016.01.018]. A study in mice demonstrated that overexpression of the mir-22 in irradiated bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells promoted apoptosis and suppressed osteogenic capacity [Jia et al. DOI:10.3389/fcell.2022.861451]. In human forensic samples, the mir-22 was reported in published data as a potential marker for saliva, though it was not selected as an absolute specific marker in a comprehensive sequencing study of six body fluids/tissues [Liu et al.
