A study in human cadavers demonstrated that exosomes and exosomal miRNAs, including the miR-222-3p, are stably preserved in postmortem serum for at least three days when stored at or below 20°C [Kanno et al. DOI:10.1007/S00414-022-02913-Y]. A separate review of human skin studies reported the miR-222-3p was downregulated in deep partial thickness burn skin four days post-burn and was also downregulated in burn-induced hypertrophic scar tissue compared to normal skin [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in rats demonstrated that rno-miR-222-3p was significantly upregulated in lung tissue at 24 hours post-burn injury, with a fold change of 4.88, and its differential expression was validated by RT-qPCR [Zhang et al. DOI:10.5505/tjtes.2018.98123]. In a separate review of thermal skin injury, the miR-222-3p was elevated in exosomes from lean adipose tissue macrophages and was found to target Bcl2l11/Bim to reprogram macrophage polarization, accelerating diabetic wound healing in mice [Wang et al. DOI:10.1007/s00438-024-02183-w].
