A study in human trauma patients demonstrated that the miR-223-5p was significantly downregulated in plasma-derived exosomes from patients with severe injury compared to operative controls, and this downregulation was linked to pathways involved in hematopoiesis [Munley et al. DOI:10.1097/TA.0000000000004225]. In a separate human study, the miR-223-5p was significantly upregulated in circulating T cells during the injury stage compared to the recovery stage in patients with major trauma [Rau et al. DOI:10.2147/JIR.S375881]. A study in rhesus macaques demonstrated that the miR-223-5p is a circulating miRNA whose relative abundance at day 2 post-total-body irradiation correlated with the time to severe neutropenia, identifying it as part of an 11-miRNA panel for predicting this hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome outcome [Rogers et al. DOI:10.1667/RADE-21-00043.1]. In a mouse model of acute myocardial infarction, the miR-223-5p was downregulated in infarcted myocardium and predicted to target the heart rate regulator Slc8a1, with its overexpression in rat cardiomyocytes decreasing Slc8a1 expression and directly targeting its 3'-UTR, linking it to post-infarction cardiac regulation [Tuerxun et al.
