In Wistar rats, the miR-106b-5p was upregulated 2.94-fold in the striatum following heroin exposure, indicating its role as a biomarker for substance addiction [Pence et al. A study in humans demonstrated that the miR-106b-5p is upregulated in the prefrontal cortex of subjects with schizophrenia (fold-change 1.22) and bipolar disorder (fold-change 1.18) [Smalheiser et al.
