A study in human myocardial autopsy specimens demonstrated that the mir-28 was up-regulated in the hearts of patients deceased with sepsis compared to non-septic controls [Pasi Lehto et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-81114-6]. In a separate human postmortem study, the mir-28 was significantly decreased in plasma-derived exosomes from subjects with acute myocardial infarction compared to controls, identifying it as a potential biomarker for this condition [Kim et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179619]. A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-28 was differentially expressed between monozygotic twins in peripheral blood, identified by massively parallel sequencing in pair 2, though this differential expression was not confirmed by subsequent real-time PCR validation [Fang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2018.09.011]. A separate review noted the mir-28 is detected in the substantia nigra of Parkinson's disease patients [Das et al. DOI:10.1080/21655979.2021.2003667].
