A study in human myocardial autopsy specimens demonstrated that the miR-28-3p was up-regulated in the hearts of patients deceased with sepsis compared to non-septic controls [Pasi Lehto et al. DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-81114-6]. In a separate human forensic study analyzing plasma-derived exosomes from postmortem samples, the miR-28-3p was significantly decreased in subjects with acute myocardial infarction compared to controls [Kim et al. DOI:10.3390/ijms25179619]. A study in humans using massively parallel sequencing and real-time PCR on blood samples from monozygotic twins identified the miR-28-3p as differentially expressed in one twin pair, though this finding was not confirmed by subsequent RT-PCR validation [Fang et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2018.09.011]. A separate review noted the miR-28-3p is also found as a downregulated exosomal miRNA in the serum of patients with chronic mild traumatic brain injury [Li et al. DOI:10.1016/j.neuint.2023.105643].
