Forensic Context

A review of human skin burns, wound healing, and scarring identified 197 miRNAs with altered expression, including the mir-298 which was upregulated in deep partial thickness burn skin four days post-injury compared to normal skin [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100]. A study in mice demonstrated that the mir-298 is reduced in brains of Alzheimer's disease transgenic animals and is associated with higher BACE1 protein levels, indicating its involvement in translational control of BACE1 [Wang et al. DOI:10.1101/Lm.026492.112]. This biomarker is also identified as being altered in AD pathology in human and rodent models [Das et al. DOI:10.1080/21655979.2021.2003667].
