Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-299-5p is upregulated in burn hypertrophic scar tissue versus normal skin [Siu et al. DOI:10.1111/wrr.13100], and separate research on trauma patients found it downregulated in male plasma-derived exosomes compared to operative controls, where it is involved in hematopoiesis [Munley et al. DOI:10.1097/TA.0000000000004225]. A review of forensic miRNA biomarkers noted that the mir-299-5p has been identified as a plasma-specific marker and also as a placental-specific marker when up-regulated in maternal plasma [Silva et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Fsigen.2014.09.002].
