Forensic Context

A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-301a is significantly negatively correlated with age in peripheral blood, with a correlation of -0.530 and a raw P value of 4.00E-08 in a microarray cohort [Meder et al. DOI:10.1373/clinchem.2014.224238]. In a separate human postmortem brain study, the mir-301a was significantly decreased (0.721 of control, p=0.0129) in the prefrontal cortex of depressed suicide subjects compared to non-psychiatric controls [Smalheiser et al. DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0033201]. A study in humans demonstrated a significant up-regulation of the mir-301a in both plasma (2.3-fold increase) and hippocampal tissue (3.2-fold increase) from a single case of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) compared to ten control forensic autopsies, supporting its potential as a biomarker for drug-resistant epilepsy and SUDEP risk [De Matteis et al. DOI:10.1016/J.Legalmed.2017.12.003]. A separate review of human postmortem brain studies noted the mir-301a is downregulated in the Brodmann area 9 of subjects with major depressive disorder who died by suicide [Yoshino & Dwivedi DOI:10.3389/fpsyt.2020.543893].
