A study in humans demonstrated that the mir-3133 is differentially expressed between monozygotic twin pairs, as it was identified as a shared differentially expressed microRNA across two pairs of twins in a microarray analysis of blood samples from 18 monozygotic twin pairs [Xiao et al. DOI:10.1016/j.fsigen.2019.05.003]. This differential expression profile suggests a potential role for the mir-3133 in the forensic identification and distinction of genetically identical individuals.
